When Buddha was on the verge of enlightenment, he was confronted by Mara, Buddhas shadow self. Mara appeared as a World Leader, seated on an elephant, and flanked by a large army. Mara demanded the spiritual throne, where Buddha was sitting. The Buddha only touched the ground with his fingertips, to summon the Goddess Earth. She bore witness to Buddha’s throne by howling a hundred thousand roars, so Mara’s elephant knelt before Buddha. Mara’s army was immediately dispersed and Mara vanquished, proving that the heart is the lasting empire, not the sword.
