Maori legend tells that tattooing began with a love affair between the young man Mataora and the underworld princess Niwareka. One day Mataora beat Niwareka, and she fled to her father's underworld realm. Mataora, filled with guilt, followed after the princess. After many trials and obstacles, Mataora eventually arrived at the underworld, but his face paint was smudged from the voyage. In his very humbled state, Mataora begged Niwareka for forgiveness, which she eventually accepted. Niwareka's father then offered to teach Mataora the art of tattooing, so his Maori war face would be on forever.
